十年を過ぎたあたりで、突然「もう危ないから買い替えてください」と言われる。
まだ動くのに。
洗浄便座は温かい水を吐き出し、リモコンのボタンにもきちんと反応する。なのに、説明書の小さな字が私に告げてくる。
「設計標準使用期間は十年です」。それ以上は自己責任。
私は考える。
自己責任って、いったい誰のための言葉なんだろう。
メーカーのため？ それとも、事故に遭うかもしれない私たち消費者のため？
昔、母の家の冷蔵庫は二十年以上も動き続けていた。時々氷が詰まって、冷凍庫の扉が開かなくなることはあったけれど、それを笑い話にして使い続けていた。
けれど今の冷蔵庫は十年。十年を過ぎると、部品はもうありません、と突き放される。
修理すら許されない。
PL法があるからだという。
欠陥があれば、過失がなくてもメーカーは責任を負わされる。だから、危険が増す長期使用は「してはいけない」のだと。
──でも、それは本当に「私たちを守るため」なのだろうか。
「守るふりをして、買い替えさせているだけじゃないの？」
そんな疑いが頭の中で囁く。
壊れやすくなったわけじゃない。
壊れていないのに、「壊れたことにしてください」と言われているだけ。
安全と引き換えに、私たちは知らないうちに「物を長く大切に使う」という権利を手放していた。
──十年で寿命だと宣告される家電と、
──十年で価値を失う私の人生。
どちらの方が残酷か、考えるのはやめにした。

Who is this “self-responsibility” for?
Is it for the manufacturer? Or is it for us, the consumers, who might be involved in an accident?
In the past, the refrigerator in my mother’s house had been working for more than twenty years. Sometimes the freezer door would get stuck due to ice jam, but we laughed about it and continued to use it.
However, my current refrigerator is ten years old. After ten years, they tell you that there are no more parts for it. Not even repairs are allowed.
This is because of the Product Liability Law.
If there is a defect, the manufacturer is held responsible, even if there was no negligence. Therefore, they say, “We must not” use the product for a long period of time, which increases the risk.
But is this really “for our protection”?
Aren’t they just pretending to protect us and forcing us to buy new ones?”
Such doubts whispered in my head.
It’s not that it’s more fragile.
It’s just that we are being told to pretend it’s broken when it’s not.
In exchange for safety, we have unknowingly given up our right to “use things with care for a long time.
The home appliance that will be pronounced dead in ten years, and my life that will lose its value in

I stopped thinking about which is more cruel.
